HAPPY INTERNATIONAL SEAFARERS DAY

Every June 25, we mark the International Day of the Seafarer, as established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating shipping, in 2010. This day is an opportunity to reflect on the tremendous contribution the maritime industry has on the trade and world economy overall.

The IMO celebrates this day to spread awareness about the work and lives of seafarers. On this day, the IMO takes the opportunity to highlight and discuss issues like sailor rights at foreign ports, their health and safety. The day is also observed to urge private ship companies and owners to provide their seafarers' adequate facilities for a safe journey on the seas.

As IMO highlights, almost everything we use in our daily lives is directly or indirectly affected by sea transport. Nearly 90 percent of the world's goods are transported by ships, and running these ships are the seafarers who work relentlessly to ensure smooth flow of trade via water. Even during the pandemic, they continued working in harsh conditions keeping the supply chain open.

Today, it's not just about drawing attention to how essential seafarers' work is, but also to remind of a need to ensure a fair future for them. This is also a theme of this year's event - A Fair Future for Seafarers. On the IMO website you can access the poll on what the fair future should look like and hear some interesting points made by seafarers worldwide.
